Hurricane season is approaching here in Florida, are you and your family prepared for the potential storms that may come? Hurricane Season goes from the beginning of June all the way through November. There are 5 different hurricane category levels based on the wind’s miles per hour. Level 1, being the. lowest at 74-95 mph; Level 2 at 96-110 mph; Level 3 at 111-129 mph; Level 4 at 130-156 mph; Level 5, the highest at 157 mph or more.

Florida has a history of hurricanes, especially on the coasts. In the last 100 years there have been 13 hurricanes of at least category 4 level with 3 of them being category 5. The Great Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 was a Category 5 hurricane that reached 185 mph and had 423 fatalities. The hurricane affected the west coast of Florida, nearly destroying the Upper Keys. The next Category 5 to hit was Hurricane Andrew, it hit in 1992. Hurricane Andrew reached 175 mph and mostly affected central and south Florida causing 65 total fatalities. The last Category 5 level hurricane to hit Florida was Hurricane Michael in October 2018. Records show the highest winds reached 160 mph and had 74 total deaths.

      Storm Preparation

Making sure your home is best prepared for a hurricane is imperative, so that you are safe from impending dangers.

      • Have your roof professionally inspected BEFORE the next major storm. Small leaks turn into big leaks eventually. Finding roof damage early can help prevent major repairs and also help protect the inside of your home, your valuables,  memories, and loved ones.
      • This could include ensuring your roof, doors, and windows are equipped enough to withstand high speed winds and heavy rain.
      • Having enough nonperishable food like nuts, cereal, peanut butter, canned foods, and granola bars at hand just in case you are unable to use appliances throughout the storm.
      • Water supply is something that can be compromised during a storm. Having enough bottled water at your disposal to last through the storm could be crucial.
      • In case of any injuries that could occur during the hurricane it is best to have a First-Aid Kit available.
      • If you have the ability to evacuate or go to a storm shelter before a hurricane arrives, you should. But if you are not able to evacuate, find a safe room in your living area to be able to hunker down for an extended period of time. It is best to have a room with no windows, but if there is not a windowless room try to board up the windows in the room.
      • While being in shelter it is best to have a radio to be able to listen to local news for updates on the status on the weather in the event that you are not able to use your phone.
